Bring on the FUN !

We’re inspired by the recent article in Yahoo! Real Estate about an East Village, NYC duplex. Starting as two penthouse condos, one on top of the other, Turett Collaborative Architects transformed the space into one 2400 sq ft home with a unique, bold, and FUN design feature – a helical slide!

While this is ultra-cool for a bachelor pad in NYC, for a family home in the suburbs, well, it would be fun until:

  • all the neighborhood preschoolers are at your doorstep everyday
  • your enterprising 8-year-old connects a hose from the bath tub to the top, or a bucket of slime
  • your teenagers use the camcorder for Facebook videos, with an iPod headphone in one ear and an iPhone attached to the other (can u hear me now??)
  • the family pet tries it

    But we digress. A house, whoever lives in it, should have some element of fun. Here’s some of our new spring products that would add some to any location:

    HGTV Dream Home 2011

    The “HGTV Dream Home 2011” is in Stowe, VT this year. We’ve previewed the designer rooms and found some unexpected uses for everyday pieces:

    A living room end table – in the master bath. There are lots of great variations of this – clear glass for visual lightness, a marble top to match a vanity, or wood for warmth. Nesting tables can give you room for a magazine, a drink, cookies! Ok, maybe an extra towel instead of cookies….

    A bedroom dresser – in the mudroom. This is our favorite. The possibilities for extra storage right where you need it. If you have the room, upgrade the entry table with not only a dresser, but a buffet, or a baker’s rack, or an audio cabinet (the hole in the back could be used for chargers or concealed), or even a tall cabinet….

    Storage Benches

    Today’s inspiration – great uses for storage benches from one of our favorite magazines – Coastal Living.

    First, in a dining room:

    "Coastal Living" Magazine: "A Light Touch"

    In this space, they were used so the gorgeous ocean view would not be blocked, but this idea can be translated to any dining room. In a smaller space, where extra storage is essential, they could house linens, larger serving trays, extra dinner ware, candles, etc. They also, if your dining table has wide set legs, could be pushed under to improve traffic flow & visual space while not in use. If your dining room is rarely used, they could contain craft items or seasonal decor.

    These neutral colored items from Sunpan would work great in any decor to achieve this look:

    Second, in a Living Room:

    In this space, the idea of having a storage ottoman tucked under a taller coffee table is genius. Extra storage for blankets or games or remotes – check. Extra seating when needed – check. Slide the wooden coffee table back to reveal a cushy spot for feet while watching tv – check.

    We suggest 1 of these larger ottomans, or 2 (or more) of the smaller ottomans for a punch of color:
